A mother and Washington Post columnist, Katherine Ellison, is upset at her 6-year old coming across
Happy Tree Friends. It's an animated cartoon site whose cutesy characters regularly meet their demise in graphic and creative ways. It's gruesome all right -- nothing a youngster should be watching. So as a parent, why am I not outraged too?
The column's flaw is in its base assumption: cartoons are just kids' stuff. Wrong. Some are. Some are not. Cartoon Network's
Adult Swim,
South Park and
Oscar-winning animated films are enough proof of that.
Sorry ma'am, just because Happy Free Friends has cute little cartoon rabbits doesn't mean it was intended for your baby to watch. Unless he has his own credit card to buy their DVD with, that is.

Back from the Dead: Zoinks Magazine - Congratulations to BoneFlake Studios for bringing back
Zoinks Magazine. It has the worthy mission of bringing more online comics to print. The first issue was very well done. I'm expecting my second issue any day now.
I hear there are some pretty good comics in there, too. :)

Planet X has a friend. I missed the press release that we had a 10th planet. We'll have to have cheesy science fiction about an 11th planet now. It is nice to see geek culture has expanded to naming new worlds. (We are everywhere!)
